Man who shot friend to death on Instagram pleads guilty
A Detroit man who accidentally shot his friend to death while filming a live video on Instagram pleaded guilty Wednesday to a misdemeanor charge.
Dawone Cook, 18, entered the plea to careless discharge of a firearm causing death in Wayne County Circuit Court. He could receive up to two years behind bars when he is sentenced at 9 a.m. July 18 by Judge Thomas Hathaway.
Police said Cook and Dylan Hemphill, 18, were showing off weapons and money in a video on Instagram when Hemphill was accidentally shot in the head about 11:55 p.m. April 2 at a home in the 17600 block of San Juan on Detroit’s northwest side.
The Wayne County Prosecutor's Office has said Cook was handling a rifle when it discharged.
