Smith: ‘Promises’ for a happy new year
“Outta’ My Mind on a Monday Moanin’”
We are now headlong into the new year. I rarely set myself up for failure by making New Year’s Resolutions. I don’t know what got into me this year, but I did make three “promises” to myself. On this second Monday of the new year, I have kept only one. The simple three promises (all within my control):
1. Get more than 3-4 hours of sleep every night
2. Eat less (and smarter)
3. Exercise more (OK, just exercise, even a little)
I am happy to announce (to my caring family and friends) I have accomplished item No. 1 on my list. So far, so good!
And this is probably the most important one on anyone’s list. The latest scientific research is irrefutable. Everyone needs seven hours of sleep for basic brain health. That got my attention, and frankly, as a friend I say it should get yours as well.
No. 2 is challenging to say the least, but I’m making slight inroads.
Let’s just say No. 3 is, well, in my sights.
■Coincidentally, the New York Times recently pointed out one of the fastest growing age groups in America are those over the age of 85.
Interestingly, older people report higher levels of contentment or well being than teenagers and young adults.
By the way, among other things, none of the octogenarians ever went to a job they didn’t like.
■Though we’ve never been on a river cruise, we’ve heard nothing but great things about our upcoming Uniworld /WJR Travel Club trip. Cruise and Tour has put together a Dream Vacation to Florence and Venice.
